How does BackerPacker work out how long my money lasts?

It divides the money you have left by your average day. The average leaves out today, because the day isn't over, and leaves out anything marked as a one-off cost. By default it uses the last 7 days. You can switch to the last 30 days or the whole trip on the Money tab, under "Count your pace over". For the first three days it leans on the guess you gave during setup, and your real spending takes over day by day.

My money left looks wrong

Open the Money tab and tap "Update money left". Type what's really left across your cards and cash. Spends from then on come off the new amount, and nothing you've already added is lost.

A spend says "Waiting for a rate"

That spend was added offline in a currency BackerPacker had no exchange rate for yet. It's saved, and it's converted the next time your phone is online. Each spend keeps the rate it was added with, so old spends don't change when rates move. If you know exactly what your card charged, open the spend and fill in "Card charged", and that amount is used instead.

I crossed a border and nothing changed

If you allowed BackerPacker to use your location, it checks which country you're in when you open it and shows a welcome card for the new country. Tap the button on that card to start the stop. Without location, add the stop yourself on the Route tab with the plus button.

How are Schengen days counted?

On any day, BackerPacker counts the days you spent in the Schengen area in the 180 days up to and including that day, and that count can't go over 90. The day you arrive and the day you leave both count. EU, EEA and Swiss passports have no limit, so nothing is counted for them. Some bilateral agreements, such as the ones some European countries have with Australia and New Zealand, aren't counted. The count is a planning aid, and the stamp in your passport and the border officer have the final word. The European Commission has its own short-stay calculator if you want to check.

Visa reminders don't arrive

Reminders come at 9 in the morning, a week before your last day and two days before. On the Route tab, open Visa days and check that "Remind me before the last day" is on. If you said no to notifications when asked, turn them on in the iPhone's Settings under Notifications, then BackerPacker.

Bringing in spends from another app

Export a CSV file from the other app, then in BackerPacker open Settings and tap "Bring in spends from a CSV file". Exports from TravelSpend, Splitwise, Tricount and most spreadsheets work. BackerPacker matches the columns by their names and shows a preview, and you can change any column before tapping Add. Spends from before you set up BackerPacker don't change your money left, because that money was already spent.

Starting a new trip

In Settings, tap "Start a new trip". The trip you're on moves to Past trips with its route, spending and journal, and you answer the setup questions for the new one.

Using BackerPacker on more than one device

This version keeps everything on one iPhone and doesn't sync. To keep a copy of your spending, use "Export every spend as CSV" in Settings.

Plus purchases

Plus for life is a single payment. The trip pass lasts 90 days from the day you buy it and never renews, so there's nothing to cancel. A second pass bought while one is running adds 90 days to the end of it. On a new iPhone, open BackerPacker Plus in Settings and tap "Restore purchases". When a pass ends, everything you recorded stays, and the trip card goes back to the two free designs.

Deleting your data

In BackerPacker, open Settings and tap "Delete all data". Read the confirmation before continuing. Deletion cannot be undone.
